If you’re getting ready for your professional headshot session, you might be thinking: Should I wear my hair natural or styled? Should I wear my glasses or take them off?
I can tell you, for sure, that these are some of the most common questions I hear as a photographer — especially from clients with curly hair or signature eyewear. And definitely, your curls and your glasses aren’t details to hide; they’re part of your story. When photographed with intention, they add texture, character, and authenticity — all the things that make a portrait stand out.
To help you look and feel like your best self, here’s how I approach curls and lenses in every headshot session.
Embrace Your Curls, Your Character.
Curls are personality in motion. They catch the light differently, frame your face in unique ways, and carry a rhythm all their own. Whether your texture is soft waves or tight coils, my goal as your photographer is to capture the natural beauty of your hair — not to change it.
Here are three common curl types I see during sessions. Let's see how we make each one shine on camera:
- “You Can’t Touch My Curls — You’ll Kill Them”
This is me above and my twin sister below!! Nobody can touch our curls!
If your curls are delicate or tightly coiled, we’ll plan to photograph them exactly as you wear them. These textures are most photogenic when they’re fresh, hydrated, and untouched. You know how to treat your curls, you're the expert. We won't add any product in the studio. We'll embrace your own unique styling. No worries, you'll get the full pampering with complimentary makeup, so get ready to enjoy the spa!
Before your session, we will make sure the hair and makeup artist handles naturally your curls. This is an important detail. I’ll handle the rest with lighting and posing that highlight definition, shape, and that beautiful natural volume.
- “Curls That Can Be Styled”
If your curls can handle some gentle styling, we can play with shape and bounce to complement your face and lighting setup. Make sure you help the stylist (and me)understand the look you love. I always say: don’t chase “perfect hair” — aim for the version of your curls that feels like you on your best day.
Some clients arrive with braids, and then my stylist adds product to get it just the way you love it. Others bring their hair styled as they like, and my HMUA adds some volume. We'll play it by ear, and my HMUA will welcome your guidance around your adored curls!
- “Straightened, Then Curled”
For some clients, smoothing the hair first and adding soft curls offers the right mix of polish and movement. This style catches studio light beautifully and adds subtle shape around your features. If this look represents your day-to-day or professional self, it’s a great option. The key is that your headshot should look like you.
Glasses on Your Face. Visual Identity
If you wear your glasses daily, my advice is simple: wear them in your headshot. Your glasses are part of your visual identity and help people recognize you. In addition, we can also take a few shots without them to give you variety, to give you options to use across platforms like LinkedIn, business websites, or creative portfolios.
One frequent question I hear is whether glasses hide expression. And the answer is no, when it is photographed with care. The right lighting ensures your eyes stay bright and engaging, so your expression feels genuine and alive.
